How to use Sync with DRM content (Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, etc)

Some content in apps may be secure content, meaning the stream is not available to Hue Essentials. Sync cannot read the stream to determine how to sync the lights. If an app developer like Netflix decides to secure its content, there is nothing we can do about this. Apps like YouTube do work.

How to use Sync with apps like Netflix on your PC or Mac:

1. Install Hue Essentials

Install Hue Essentials on your PC or Mac. Then open Hue Essentials and start the Sync feature.

2. Open Netflix

Open Netflix.com in your web browser. We tested Hue Essentials with the following web browsers:

Google Chrome

You need to disable Hardware Acceleration in Google Chrome settings:

  1. Go to the following URL (copy/paste this URL):
    chrome://settings/system

  2. Disable the option “Use hardware acceleration when available”
  3. Restart Google Chrome

Please note that disabling hardware acceleration may decrease performance of your web browser, so it is best to only disable this option when using Sync. Or you can use another web browser just for Sync.

Microsoft Edge

You need to disable Hardware Acceleration in Microsoft Edge settings:

  1. Go to the following URL (copy/paste this URL):
    edge://settings/system

  2. Disable the option “Use hardware acceleration when available”
  3. Restart Microsoft Edge

Please note that disabling hardware acceleration may decrease performance of your web browser, so it is best to only disable this option when using Sync. Or you can use another web browser just for Sync.

Firefox

No additional setup needed

3. Cast to your TV (optional)

Now you have Netflix working with Sync on your PC or Mac. You can connect your PC or Mac to your TV with a HDMI cable or cast the screen using Google Chrome.
