Hue Slim Downlight - Straddle Ceiling Joist?

Hi, not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, but trying anyway. If this is not the place, will some kindly soul please point the right way?

I am installing some Philips Hue Slim Downlights (the canless lights) in my ceiling. For optimal placement for lighting, some of them will have to straddle a ceiling joist. Is this thin enough that by cutting a circular hole in the sheetrock, and keeping the clips away from the joist, I can successfully install it? Or, does it strictly have to be between joists?

Thanks!
